Titusville’s Enchanted Forest Sanctuary with Kids

The Enchanted Forest Sanctuary is one of Titusville’s crown jewels. It sits on the southern side of town and is passed by thousands of tourists on their way to Kennedy Space Center. Probably only a fraction of those tourists notice the sign as they drive back to their hotel or home. However, those who do notice and make a stop are rewarded with lush forests and quiet trails.

Location and hours

The Sanctuary is located at 444 Columbia Blvd (also known as State Road 405) in Titusville, Florida. It is on the north side of the road. However, if you reach US1 or Highway 407, you have gone too far. It is almost directly across the street from Space Coast Regional Airport.

The Enchanted Forest is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. It is closed on most major holidays. Admission is free. If you are walking the trails, make sure to sign the trail book.

Nature Center

After entering the parking lot, you will first notice the Nature Center. Inside of which you will find a small interpretive area, a gift shop, restrooms, and classrooms.

The interpretive area has a good number of hands-on exhibits for kids and adults. Everyone can learn about the forest ecosystem and much more. The area is small but well done.

Homeschool classes, guided nature walks, yoga classes, and other clubs all meet at the Enchanted Forest. They also have Forest Fundays and other events occasionally. Outside the Nature Center, there is a large picnic area and amphitheater.

Trails

The Enchanted Forest Sanctuary has great trails. There are 8 total ranging in length from 0.1 to 1.1 miles. Our family likes to combine trails to create one long hike. You can find a trail map here. For instance, we start on the Enchanted Crossing then take the Coquina Trail to Biodiversity Loop then break off to the Tomoka Trail and Magnolia Loop. We finish up with the Tortoise Trail, which ends at the parking lot. By the end of our hike, our 3 kids are quite tired. It comes out to close to 4 miles total.

We love stopping to look at the historic Addison Canal. The canal meanders all the way from the St. Johns River. A historic marker can be found at the canal.

The trails are passable almost year-round. After a big rainfall or hurricane, conditions may not be ideal. Yes, there are mosquitoes! It is Florida after all. Come prepared with bug spray. Most of the trails are shaded, except for the Ridge Trail. It is pretty exposed to the sunlight. Also, don’t forget to bring water.

Coming with kids?

Kids will love stretching their legs and exploring nature as they wander the trails. In addition, geocaching is a popular activity in the sanctuary that kids may also enjoy. Similarly, our kids loved the scavenger hunts they were given in the Nature Center.

Please be responsible and watch your kids. There are steep cliffs near the Addison Canal and poison ivy can be found anywhere. Likewise, snakes and wildlife are also abundant in the forest. There is a sign at the Nature Center where you can see what has been spotted most recently.

I hope your family enjoys the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary as much as our family does!
