Viera Wetlands is one of those places you don’t even know exists unless you are a local. Even then, it’s not widely known. It is one of Brevard County’s best-kept secrets.
What is it?
Viera Wetlands is a treatment wetland system that polishes reclaimed water for reuse in irrigation or overflow into canals. The treatment area consists of 200 acres divided into 4 cells, a central lake, and 2 observation towers. Each cell has a different depth creating diverse wetland conditions.
When visiting Viera Wetlands you have the choice to drive, walk, or bike along the various berms. At times you will find the berms closed because of site conditions. The drive is not long but is one lane. During a wildlife sighting, traffic may back up. You will also encounter lots of bird photographers. Just go slowly and pass when it is safe to do so.
Update 8/2021: You are no longer allowed to drive around the Viera Wetlands. Berms are only open to foot and bicycle traffic.
Not only is the treatment of wetland polishing water, but it is also creating a diverse ecosystem. Visitors are able to see an abundance of birds, wildlife, and native vegetation. During our visit, we saw lots of different birds and a couple gators.
The Lake
Adjacent to the lake is a small parking area. Here you will find a gazebo, benches, and a flower garden. It is a nice peaceful area to get out of your vehicle and enjoy your surroundings. It would make a great picnic spot!
From the parking area, you can take a short walk to one of the two observation towers. During our January visit, the tower pictured was closed. Hopefully, you will find them both open.
What about the kids?
The wetlands are a great place for kids to explore and learn about birds and other wildlife. I would caution parents though, don’t let your kids get too rambunctious. Many visitors are there to bird watch and they wouldn’t be too happy if your kids scared all the birds away. Also, watch your kids! There are alligators. We saw at least two on banks sunning themselves. Just use common sense and have a good time.
Hours and location
Viera Wetlands is open daily all year long. Hours vary with the seasons, so check their website. During the spring and summer months, they also have occasional events like a 5K and a nature festival. If you don’t want to attend these events check their website to see what is going on.
The wetlands can be found at 3658 Charlie Corbeil Way in Viera, Florida. Basically, you take Wickham Road west almost to the very end. There are directional signs, so be on the lookout. It might seem like you are going to a water treatment plant, but just keep going.
If you happen to be visiting the Brevard Zoo, Viera Wetlands is a great place to tag onto your trip. The zoo isn’t far at all.
