My Very First Puppy Class – 8/18/18

This morning I went to Canine Companion’s Southeast Region’s campus for my very first puppy class.

First, our teacher, Ms. Robin, helped make sure my Gentle Leader was adjusted correctly. We have to wear these whenever we train. Then, we all sat in the “cradle” position and we talked about any problems or issues we may be experiencing. “Cradling” is a submissive position where we lie on our back between our handler’s legs. I mentioned how I am not very motivated by my kibble and so am not doing well with training, yet. It was discussed that I may need to try some “high value” treats – a training treat that I can’t resist. I found out some of the other puppies, especially the other full Golden Retriever in class, has to do the same. I guess it’s a Golden thing.

After sharing time, we got up to practice the command “let’s go”. This is where we are supposed to walk directly next to our handler’s leg. I was highly distracted by my Gentle Leader and watching the other puppies, so I wouldn’t practice the command. My puppy raiser, Sarah, kept trying to entice me with kibble, but I didn’t want any kibble.

After practicing “let’s go” for a while, a few of the older puppies wanted to practice their “kennel” command. When we are told “kennel”, we are to enter a crate and turn around for our handler to take off our Gentle Leader and collar. I laid down and watched. Sometimes you can learn a lot by watching others.

Even though I didn’t really practice any commands, my first puppy class was very tiring. By the end of class, I decided it was time to take a nap. Learning is hard work!

There’s so much to learn! I’m looking forward to my next class.

  1. Oh, sweet Makenzie, sounds like you had a great first class. Not to worry, you’ll be doing all those things the big dogs do before you know it!
